My wife Rhonda and I hiked on the Kingsnake Trail on a cold clear morning for a little birding (me) and black-and-white photography (Rhonda). The birding was above average until the wind picked up. We stopped at a favorite overlook on Summer Duck Slough, but found no kingfishers, waders or waterfowl there. At the southern terminus of the trail, we turned east instead of west and followed a slough to Big Snake Slough. Along the way, we took photos of the remnants of an old log dike. I had wanted to reach a large open pond on Big Snake Slough, but the recent rains had raised water levels, which stopped us short. We returned to Kingsnake Trail through the open understory and headed home.
